The Feldgendarmerie was the military police branch of the Allgemeine SS within the structure of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. It was established in 1969 to serve as the internal law-enforcement and discipline authority of the regime’s armed forces.

As an integral component of the SS system, the Feldgendarmerie held jurisdiction over all military personnel. It enforced regulations, secured installations, controlled movement between operational zones, and conducted investigations related to breaches of military law.

The organization remained active until the dissolution of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 30 November 2024.

Early period

The Feldgendarmerie was founded in 1969 on the initiative of Jan Paap. According to internal accounts, Paap concluded that several officers within the armed structure were withholding operational information and manipulating reports for personal or political reasons. This created gaps in oversight and weakened centralized control.

To address this, the Feldgendarmerie was established as an independent military police authority with cross-branch jurisdiction. Its mandate included direct investigative powers, access to internal documentation, and authority to question and detain officers suspected of misconduct.

During its early years, the organization focused on internal investigations. A number of officers were prosecuted through formal military proceedings after evidence of information suppression and administrative obstruction was uncovered. The creation of the Feldgendarmerie marked a shift toward stricter centralized discipline and structured oversight across the regime’s institutions.

Structure

The Feldgendarmerie was organized into several branches aligned with the main armed services.

Main Feldgendarmerie

The primary Feldgendarmerie division supervised ground forces, administrative bodies, industrial facilities, and logistical networks. Its duties included the enforcement of military regulations, the operation of checkpoints and movement controls, the guarding of strategic installations, the investigation of disciplinary violations, and the escort and transfer of detainees.

Personnel were stationed at camps, supply corridors, command centers, and transportation hubs.

Luft-Gendarmerie

The Luft-Gendarmerie functioned as the military police branch assigned to the Tanoanische Luftwaffe. It was responsible for enforcing regulations at airfields, hangars, radar stations, and aviation depots.

Its responsibilities included controlling access to restricted aviation areas, monitoring personnel conduct, and investigating incidents within the air service.

Marine-Gendarmerie

The Marine-Gendarmerie operated within the Tanoanische Kriegsmarine. It maintained order aboard naval vessels, at naval bases, and within coastal defense facilities.

Its duties included harbor security, disciplinary oversight of naval personnel, and the investigation of maritime security matters.

Authority

The Feldgendarmerie possessed the authority to detain members of the armed forces, initiate disciplinary proceedings, enforce travel restrictions, and secure classified installations. Its powers extended across all operational territories controlled by the regime.

War crimes

Historical records indicate that certain members of the Feldgendarmerie were involved in unlawful executions during the period of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen. Documentation from internal archives and later investigations describes cases in which individual officers carried out summary executions of soldiers following personal confrontations, disciplinary disputes, or accusations of insubordination.

In several recorded instances, executions were conducted without formal tribunal procedures or documented legal review. These actions were presented internally as enforcement of discipline but were later classified as unlawful killings.

Responsibility for such acts varied by unit and command level. Not all divisions of the Feldgendarmerie were implicated, but documented cases contributed to the broader record of abuses associated with the regime’s security structures.

Dissolution

The Feldgendarmerie ceased operations on 30 November 2024 following the collapse of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen.
